CARLISLE, Pa. ? Led by an impressive debut showing from their freshman classes, the Gettysburg College track & field teams opened their season on Saturday at the DuCharme Invitational, hosted by Gettysburg College.
The women?s team, which had eight top-three finishes, placed third out of 10 teams. The men?s team came in eighth among 11 teams.
Freshman Katie McCoubrie captured Gettysburg?s lone victory of the meet, winning the long jump in 16-1 1/2. The Bullets added five runner-up showings, including two from freshman Katie Cavanaugh. She was the top collegiate finisher in the 55-hurdles and just missed the school record, coming up just three-hundredths of a second shy with a mark of 8.71. Cavanaugh also broke into Gettysburg?s all-time top-10 in the 55-meter dash, clocking a 7.65 to move into sixth.
Sophomore Taylor Flatau was second in both the high jump (4-9 3/4) and the triple jump (32-2 1/4), as was freshman Cynthia Greenberg in the 800-meter run (2:34.16).
Senior Joy Hallfors and freshman Claire Benoist D?Etiveaud tied for third in the high jump, clearing 4-7 3/4.
McCoubrie also placed fifth in the triple jump (32- 3/4) while Flatau (long jump, 15-5 1/2) and freshman Kimberly Neff (mile, 6:04.83) each took sixth. In addition, Cavanaugh was seventh in the 200-meter dash (29.28) while freshman Ally Siegel (pole vault, 8-6), Hallfors (long jump, 14-11 1/4), and freshman Carolyn Marcello (triple jump, 29-8) were eighth. Siegel?s mark moved her into a tie for eighth in school history.
The men?s team was led by senior Andrew Bay and freshman Bryan Procopio, who each placed fourth. Bay was timed at 24.32 in the 200-meter dash while Procopio crossed the line in 55.23 in the 400.
Freshman Steve Avino added a fifth-place finish in the high jump (5-7) and a sixth-place showing in the 55-hurdles (8.38) while Bay (55-dash, 6.74) and senior Tom Senseney (long jump, 19-3 1/4) each took sixth. Avino's time in the hurdles ranks eighth in school history.
Senseney also tied for seventh in the high jump (5-5) while sophomore Edward Makinde was eighth in both the long jump (19- 3/4) and the triple jump (38-7). Sophomore Malcolm Belin was also eighth in the 55-meterdash (6.99).
Gettysburg returns to the oval on Jan. 23 for the Ursinus Pentathlon and on Jan. 26 at the University of Delaware Invitational.
