Symbolic forms like aural sounds, oral expressions, signs and languages are communicative sources that help social scientists understand social phenomena and enable them to postulate the concepts and methodologies of social sciences. Communication of this kind is the organic basis of disciplines of social anthropology and sociology even as a theory of the society in which communication is spatially situated is essential to evolve an adequate theory of communication. This volume explores the interface between communication, sociology and anthropology, examining the advances made in these disciplines by referring to advancements made in Western social sciences. It presents an overview of the theoretical and cultural dimensions of the forms and processes of communication in India. In this context, it covers traditional forms of communication and their interface with theory by referring to folk culture and the construction of the notion of community in communication researches. The comprehensive volume with articles by experts highlights the forms of communication and its effects on institutions related to the social and cultural domains such as language and identity and national political mobilisation. It examines the interface of the communication processes with culture and its implications for social change by delving into aspects of popular culture and the challenges of globalisation. The scholarly essays deal with sociological and anthropological issues of contemporary significance including tribal social structure and formation, debates on the concepts of tribe and caste, the sociology of professions and entrepreneurship as emergent facets of sub-structures and sub-cultures in India in the process of social change, and the changing interface between religion and culture. The essays also cover Dalit consciousness and sociology of gender. Miss Laguna Hills goal: End relationship violence | teen, dating, club ...

LAGUNA HILLS After being in a nine-month relationship that included name-calling and controlling behavior Morgan Berschauer realized that what was happening with her boyfriend wasn't normal.

"I realized the way he was treating me wasn't normal," Berschauer, 18, said. "I realized that there wasn't something wrong with me but with my relationship. I broke up with my boyfriend and found Laura's House. I learned about the red flags and warning signs of abuse."

Laguna Hills High senior Morgan Berschauer, 18, left, says she was in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend of nine months. Her mom Felicia of Laguna Hills encouraged her daughter to break up. Berschauer wanted the city council to recognized her Miss Laguna Hills Teen OC title, which she got three years ago, so she'd be able to wear the crown and sash to various activites. She'll be speaking at a candlelight vigil Friday at Laura's House retail store, Lake Forest, to bring awareness to teen dating violence. National Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Week runs Feb. 2-6.

CINDY YAMANAKA THE ORANGE COUNTY REGISTER

On Friday Berschauer, who in January competed as Miss Laguna Hills in the Miss California Teen USA pageant in Palm Dessert, will be a featured speaker at a candlelight vigil planned in Lake Forest at Laura's House Resale Boutique. The event is being held to create awareness of teen dating violence.

Since volunteering at Laura's House, Berschauer has started a H.E.A.R.T Club at Laguna Hills High School. Annually, Laura's House provides its H.E.A.R.T. program to more than 3,000 Orange County teens at local high schools, junior colleges and other youth facilities. The program helps teens become educated on healthy relationships and appropriate conflict resolution skills. Laura's House also has a website designed to assist teens who are seeking information on healthy relationships. Teens can go to laurashouse.org/lhteen.

"When I found this amazing charity it, and the people who work so hard for it, it changed my life," She said. "Now I am doing anything I can to help raise awareness and educate for their HEART program. What they do does work. It takes incredible generosity, dedication, and time to accomplish what they have so far, and I am hoping to add to their accomplishments."

In an interview with the Register, Berschauer talks about her club and the importance of the awareness of violence in teen dating.

Q. You started the H.E.A.R.T Club at Laguna Hills High, why was that something that was important to you?

A. This club is something extremely important to me and I feel that every high-schooler should be, at some point, required to learn about teen dating abuse.

Q. How many members do you have? Is the club well-received at the school?

A. There are 57 members signed up to be in the club at our school's club rush towards the beginning of the school year. This club both is, and is not, received well. Some people are grateful for it, others tend to ignore it completely.

Q. How common is teen dating violence? What are some of the scenarios you've come across?

A. One in four teens is a victim of teen dating abuse. Some scenarios I have come across are those of mental and emotional abuse, all the way to physical beatings and stabbings ending in death.

Q. What role does exposure to family domestic violence play in teen dating?

A. If you do not have a good example of what a healthy relationship looks like, all you know is abuse and you see nothing wrong with it. Then you believe that it is normal. If a young adult, male or female, is exposed to family domestic violence their likelihood of being abuse in a teen dating relationship may go up.

Q. What do you hope others take from your own story?

A. I am not only an advocate for the education and prevention of teen dating abuse, but I am a survivor and educator myself. I feel that sharing my story with others will help them to leave an abusive relationship, look for the warning signs, warn their friends, and keep educating to prevent this terrible situation from happening to anyone else.

The event will be held in honor of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month and starts at 6 p.m. at 23635 El Toro Road.

CAIRO (AP) ? Protesters filled the streets and clashed for a second day Friday with police who fired tear gas and birdshot in Cairo, as a deadly soccer riot focused rising public anger over lawlessness and collapsing security a year after Egypt's uprising.

Six people have been killed and more than 1,500 injured in the latest bloodshed that followed a violent melee and stampede after a soccer game Wednesday in the Mediterranean city of Port Said in which 74 people died.

Egyptians streamed out of Friday prayers in Cairo, Alexandria, Suez and several Nile Delta cities, criticizing police and calling on the military rulers led by Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi to step down.

On Cairo's Tahrir Square ? the heart of the uprising that ousted President Hosni Mubarak a year ago ? protesters raised banners and pictures of those killed in Port Said and chanted, "The people want to execute the marshal."

The police force, which for decades was associated with torture and corruption in the Mubarak regime, is now being criticized in the soccer stadium deaths ? whether from a lack of control or, as some alleged, on purpose.

For many Egyptians, the security vacuum is not just a sign of incompetence but part of the larger overall failure by the military council to steer the country through its turbulent transitional period. They also see selectivity in policing the streets.

Leading democracy advocate Mohamed ElBaradei said delays in reforming the security apparatus is itself "a crime against the nation," adding that the current violence is the "price we pay for stumbling in the transitional period."

The clashes in Cairo began Thursday as the bodies of the dead soccer fans were returned to the capital for burial, and the violence escalated. Protesters converged on the headquarters of the Interior Ministry, which oversees police, throwing stones.

Police responded with tear gas and birdshot, and protesters donned helmets and gas masks to battle their way through streets thick with smoke from tear gas and burning tires.

"I came because I'm trying to do anything to feel that I took part in getting people's rights and voicing all that's inside me," said 20-year-old Ahmed Emad, whose two friends were killed in Port Said. "If I sit at home, I will explode after all I've seen."

The death toll from Friday's violence rose to six. That figure included a security officer in Cairo, according to the official MENA news agency.

One protester in Cairo was killed after being hit by birdshot at close range, a volunteer doctor said on condition of anonymity because he feared reprisal.

Four protesters died in Suez after police opened fire on a crowd of about 3,000 demonstrators in front of police headquarters, according to local health officials. A third protester in Suez was in critical condition with a wound to the neck.

The Port Said soccer riot began when fans of the home team, Al-Masry, stormed the field after their club defeated Al-Ahly, one of Cairo's top teams. Police in black uniforms and riot gear were seen in television video broadcast nationwide standing by and largely doing nothing amid the chaos.

The bloodshed ? the worst in the soccer world in 15 years ? enraged protesters who were already frustrated with the slow pace of reform by the military leaders.

A network of zealous Al-Ahly soccer fans known as Ultras, who were prominent police foes during the uprising, accused the security forces of deliberately allowing the Al-Masry supporters to attack.

Some lawmakers suggested that the military allowed the attack to happen to show the need for a reinstatement of the recently abolished emergency laws, in which the police enjoyed nearly unlimited power.

For their part, police are resentful of the abuse they suffered during the uprising and they also fear being criticized or even prosecuted if they use excessive force, something that was tolerated and encouraged under Mubarak.

Activist Nour Nour said Interior Ministry officials "failed in providing security but have been successful in protecting what they want to protect."

The ruling generals, for their part, have accused a "third party" and "foreign hands" of being behind acts of violence.

Tantawi said incidents like the soccer violence "happen anywhere in the world. We will not let those behind it go. ... This will not affect Egypt and its security."

The police failure to prevent the soccer riot was the bloodiest example of a series of security lapses as crime has surged since the uprising.

Two American tourists and their tour guide were abducted at gunpoint Friday and held for several hours by Bedouin tribesmen in a brazen daylight attack along a busy highway in the Sinai desert, dealing another blow to Egypt's already battered tourism industry.

Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib, the head of security for southern Sinai, said the three were taken from a minivan while traveling from St. Catherine's Monastery to the Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

They were released hours later after promises by security officials to look into their demands, which include the release of a number of fellow tribesmen arrested this week on drug trafficking and robbery charges.

Bedouins have long complained of discrimination and random arrests by the government, and the Sinai was restive even under Mubarak, but the kidnappings of the Americans and other recent high-profile attacks signaled an escalation.

Elsewhere on the Sinai Peninsula, four masked gunmen stopped the vehicle of two Italian workers for a food factory in the city of Suez, taking their car, more than 10,000 euros ($13,000) and their laptops, said company director Mohammed Antar. The Italians were not harmed.

On Monday, there was a series of major thefts in Cairo, including armed robberies at two banks and a mail office.

Adel Shokry, the secretary general of the south Sinai Hotel Association, said the general security situation in the country is "pitiful."

"I think there is plenty of lawlessness. The security agencies are not working as efficiently as they had before. They must review their positions," he said. "I think the army must step in to fill in this security vacuum."

My family tree is full of ? no, not nuts, that's a stupid saying ...

So, remember Rough on Rats? OF COURSE YOU DO. If you don?t, here. Read the saga. There you go, don?t you feel totally enlightened on all things arsenic-poisoning-related? (Crap, now that I?m talking about this again, the FBI is adding more and MORE pages to my file, aren?t they? Dammit. Well, I guess someone?s got to keep the FBI in business and today it?s me.)

So if you remember, my mother dropped the bomb that I had a relative who was poisoned by arsenic and that I?d never been told about when I told her about my very intensive research into Rough on Rats.

This is not surprising. I have long suspected my family is in some sort of witness-protection program. BOTH SIDES of my family. Because not only do they not talk about our history or our ancestors, they have NO INTEREST in it. NONE. Who doesn?t have any interest in where they came from or even what nationality they are? I remember coming home once when I was a kid and asking my mom what nationality we were and her saying, ?American,? and me saying, ?Yes, I KNOW American, but BEFORE that, we aren?t Native American, so we must have come from SOMEWHERE? and her saying, ?I don?t know, maybe Canada?? WHAT THE HELL. Who doesn?t know, and doesn?t care, what nationality you are at all?

This is why I am totally obsessed with that show Who Do You Think You Are. I want to be famous enough to be on Who Do You Think You Are. This is one of my dreams. I don?t want to be famous enough to have all the money or a hot actor husband or twenty adopted children from Zimbabwe or a gold-plated bidet; I want to be famous enough to be on a low-rated NBC show where someone does research into your family and finds out you were related to royalty, or you came over on the Mayflower, or your ancestors were dentists, or something. THIS IS MY DREAM. Shut up, I don?t judge YOUR dreams.

I attempted to do some genealogical research years ago but I didn?t get very far because I am poor and I think to really get very far you need to have money for spreadsheets and websites and research and travel and also you need a lot of free time, and I don?t have any of those things.

I have found out, however, the following things, from random conversations with and observations of family members:

Both sides of my family were originally from Canada (this is not surprising, considering we all have French last names)

We have some ancestry from Ireland, going way back (I can TOTALLY officially celebrate St. Patrick?s Day now, I mean, I WON?T, I think it?s just an excuse to get totally drunk on cheap green beer, but I COULD)

Even though my dad attempts to hide it, his mother?s side of the family were all staunch Democrats, going way back, and all his years of telling me he had no idea where I came from or what?s wrong with me was a total ruse, it?s HEREDITARY, Dad (and also? His cousin J. MET BILL CLINTON and has a PHOTO OF HIM SHAKING HIS HAND and this is SO EXCITING TO ME but when I bring that up to my father he just shakes his head and mutters grumblingly under his breath, something about ?damn liberals?)

Both of my grandfathers were in the military; one actually fought in World War II and I?ve seen photos of him in Japan, and the other was something top-secret and I didn?t even know about it until I went home recently and saw a military thingamabobber on his grave and asked about it and my mom said ?we don?t talk about that? and THAT IS MYSTERIOUS so probably he was a spy

And that?s about it. I KNOW. That?s like nothing! So I think it will be no surprise to anyone that, from an early age, I started randomly making up stories about my ancestors. Because if no one was going to tell me anything, dammit, I was going to make shit up. This has carried over into today. I was having this conversation with @lgalaviz this weekend. There is nothing more boring than telling a story the way it actually happened, in my opinion. Embellishing the story for effect makes it so much better and makes people want to listen to your story more, right? I mean, think of the best storytellers you know. Do they say, ?I went to the store today and bought eggs and milk? or do they say ?I went to the store today and some douchecanoe cut me off in the parking lot while they were talking on their cell phone, and then when I was in the store I?m pretty sure the guy at the deli counter was hitting on me, or maybe he had something in his eye, IT IS HARD TO TELL WITH THESE THINGS, then I bought some eggs and milk and the checkout guy was all, ?You didn?t buy chocolate this time? which makes me think that probably I?m buying chocolate way too often if they remember me for my totally over-the-top chocolate-buying-binges, then when I was in the parking lot I thought about egging the car of the cutter-offer person, since I totally had the eggs in my bag and all, but I restrained, because I wanted to make an omelet when I got home and didn?t want to waste all those good eggs.? WHICH STORY IS BETTER. The second one, right? Right. I mean, unless you?re on your way to something and time?s an issue, in which case, you might want the first one just because you?re in a hurry. ANYWAY. So I learned from a very young age to make up stories, because I didn?t have any info so why the hell NOT make up stories, and also that made them a lot more interesting.

Oh, on a related note, so not really SIDE NOTE, here is an example.

So my parents met and got married and shit, whatever, as people do. Over the years, bits and pieces of that story came out because, like I mentioned, it?s like state secrets around the Amy household. And I kind of stitched them together into a story of my own about how they got together. This was my story of how my parents met and got married.

My mom was dating to a guy and the guy was drafted and went off to Vietnam. He said, ?will you wait for me?? and she said, ?Yes, I will.? While he was over there, my dad came back from the military. My mom was in a bar and my dad was there and got in a big bar fight and she fixed his bleeding face and he was totally charming and she was pretty and so they fell in love. When the military guy came back, he heard my mom and dad were engaged so he came after my dad and found him in a bar and was all, ?you stole my lady!? and he and my dad got in a huge fight and my dad totally won. And now that guy is weird and short and chubby and a doctor.

When I told my mother this story one day, she laughed until she cried. When she finally stopped laughing enough for me to ask WHY she was laughing, she said, ?Um?you know none of that happened, right?? and I said, ?What? No, I?m pretty sure it did,? and she said, ?Well, I was there, and you weren?t, SINCE YOU WEREN?T BORN,? and she said what really happened was she was dating short doctor guy, and he was drafted, but they weren?t even serious, and she did meet my dad at a bar, but there was never any brawling at all, and when short doctor came back, he did accidentally see my mom and dad out one night and jokingly say to my dad ?you stole my lady? or something similar but he wasn?t even serious because he and my mom weren?t even an item. Oh, and yes, he is short and chubby and a doctor now. And, TRUE FACT!, my dad scowls whenever he sees him because he used to date my mom. That makes me laugh, my parents have been married for like forty years.?(Also, before I found out about the bar, my mom used to tell us they met at a church picnic. When the bar story came out, I said, ?What? What about the picnic?? and she said, ?I didn?t want you to think when you were little that your father and I were lushes.? Hee!)

THAT STORY SUCKS A BAG OF DICKS.

MY STORY IS SO MUCH BETTER. My story has INTRIGUE and FIGHTING and BLEEDING and ROMANCE and POSSIBLE ALCOHOLISM. The real story has BORING PEOPLE meeting at BORING BARS and BORINGLY DATING.

(Oh, also, and unrelated, once my mom dated someone named ?Bouncy McGee.? His real first name wasn?t ?Bouncy? ? and his last name wasn?t McGee but I don?t want to put his real name here, that?s so mean ? but apparently he bounced when he walked and it made his hair pop up and down so that was his nickname. MOM. What kind of people were you dating before you met Dad? Short dudes and people with walking issues? That is sad.)

And before you say, ?But that?s LYING!? it?s not, not really. It?s EMBELLISHING. For EFFECT. No one is HURT in the telling of a better story. I?d argue that people are HELPED, actually. Helped because they are entertained! They leave nourished! They leave with the satisfied, full-belly feeling of a good, fun story, told well, with many details to make it seem more real!

ANYWAY. This isn?t what I?m here to talk about today at all.

So my mom promised to investigate the ancestor who was murdered by Rough on Rats for me the next time she talked to my grandmother. I?m not going home again probably until the summer, so I wouldn?t be able to talk to her about it. I mean, I guess I could call her. But I hate the phone. I?m totally the worst on the phone. And my grandmother is yelly on the phone and doesn?t often hear you when you are asking her things.

So she went to visit my grandmother and told me she couldn?t send me a PDF of the newspaper article about the relative who was a Rough on Rats murderer because it was super-glued into an album my grandmother had so it wasn?t removable for scanning and PDFing. Dammit. I said, ?Mom, did you read it?? and she said she SKIMMED IT. Why doesn?t anyone in my family care that we totally have a murderess in our family? I asked, ?did it mention Rough on Rats?? and she actually said, ?I don?t REMEMBER.? GET WITH THE PROGRAM MOM.

She did remember the name of the murderess, however, and with the help of @cmtomaso, who is the hero of the hour, I was pointed in the direction of this website. All the newspapers of upstate New York! PDFed! Going back to the 1800s! SO EXCITING! Well, except the Malone Evening Telegram, which is the suckiest newspaper in the history of print journalism. They don?t even have a website. WHAT NEWSPAPER IN 2012 DOESN?T HAVE A WEBSITE. Seriously, Malone Evening Telegram, you call me and hire me and I will get you into the 21st century for only about $40,000 a year salary and full benefits. CALL ME.

And LOOKIE LOOKIE!!!?

If you can?t read this, I think you can click to enlarge? I don?t know how the world works, maybe not.

Unfortunately, as you can see, the newspapers in the 40s in upstate New York weren?t into tabloid-style journalism, because if I?d been a reporter back then, I?d totally have written something more than these two very factual pieces. There would have been a lot more ?THE BLACK WIDOW? and shit, if I?d written them, I can tell you right now.

Things that bear note:

I like how it says that most crimes in Franklin County are ?run-of-the-mill.? Probably not to the people that are being criminalized, Fort Covington Sun.

My mother told me she thought my murderess great-great-aunt killed both my great-granduncle and then her next husband, but this article seems to imply that she killed my great-granduncle, her own son, and then attempted to poison her employer, which is when she got caught. I couldn?t find any followup articles on whether or not my great-granduncle and third cousin (is that right? he?d have been my grandmother?s first cousin, so my mom?s second cousin, and my third cousin? or am I totally off?) were found with arsenic in their systems or not. The Fort Covington Sun really wasn?t the best with reporting, I think.

So her story is that she was driven to it because her employer mistreated her. I need more info, Fort Covington Sun. What work did she do for him, exactly? Housework? Farm work? Something more?naughty? Worrisome.

SEVEN CHILDREN. Good gravy.

She was 11 years younger than my great-granduncle and then ten years older than her second husband. I?m thinking pickins were slim back then in my hometown. Oh, wait, they still are now. Nothing?s changed in that department.

SEVEN CHILDREN. Gulp. She had her first one when she was 19. So she married my great-granduncle when she was, say, 18? And he was 29. That seems like probably it was ill-advised.

The judge?s name was ?Cornelius J. Carey.? Hee! That is a VERY OFFICIOUS NAME.

My two little third cousins were county charges! I wonder whatever happened to them!

Then she was sent to the mental institution for being a looney poisoner. Sigh. ?Female mental defectives.? Maybe she was just tired. SEVEN CHILDREN SERIOUSLY.

Also, Rough on Rats was never mentioned. SIGH.

So since there is a LOT of info missing, I am OBVIOUSLY forced to make up a story about her, in which she is a beleaguered, exhausted wife, with an old husband (sorry, Great Grand-Uncle John) and SEVEN DAMN CHILDREN and something pushed her over the edge (I?m thinking something to do with the SEVEN CHILDREN) and then she did some murderin?. I don?t really have an excuse for her murdering her fifteen-year-old son, though. That one?s pretty heinous, I have to admit. Then we have the attempted murder of her employer, who seemed to be imprisoning her in his house (what the hell?) so probably that was justified. I feel like maybe this might be a the-night-the-lights-went-out-in-Georgia situation or something. THERE IS MORE TO THIS STORY.

I?ll get more information about this when I go home and talk to my grandmother. My grandmother?s stories are salty and full of cusses and my mom says she still calls my murderous great-great-aunt ?that bitch? so I?m totally looking forward to this.

Also, producers of Who Do You Think You Are, I know I?m not a famous person, but LOOK AT WHO?S IN MY FAMILY TREE. Would I NOT make the best hour of television ever? CALL ME RIGHT NOW. I would be SO EFFING ENTERTAINING. I mean, no one?s watching that show but me, anyway, what have you got to lose? NOTHING. It is my DREAM. Sigh.

New app takes cyber-jamming a new level (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 1 (TheWrap.com) ? Music junkies looking to looking to live out their rock 'n' roll fantasies in a virtual realm will have their chance in March.

The upcoming WholeWorldBand app -- set to launch next month -- brings musical collaboration to a new level, allowing users to jam with established musical artists, either by adding themselves to an artist's video performance and playing along with them, or substituting themselves with any member of the band. (Note: It might not be wise to swap yourself with Keith Richards -- some things are best not tried at home, kids.)

The app will also allow users to videotape themselves performing music and collaborate with other members of the WorldBandApp community.

WholeWorldBand hopes to distinguish itself from other music-collaboration services with its heightened visual element. While some sites allow collaboration but contain no visual element, and others have a visual element but lack full interactivity, WholeWorldBand seeks to fill the gap between the two.

What's more, users actually stand to take in a little cash from their efforts; each time a user's video is downloaded and shared by another user, the video's creator earns money.

And people say that it's difficult to make it as a professional musician.

The app will be available for the iPhone 4 and 4s, and the iPad2. Start polishing your chops now.

LEGAL Immigration ? Tool for Modern Day Slavery ? Boogai.net

By Solomon Gifford, Numbers USA

When NumbersUSA aired the ?Lower LEGAL Immigration? ad during two recent GOP national debates, a number of individuals posted comments on Twitter in disbelief that any organization would advocate lower legal immigration levels. Amnesty is the only form of LEGAL immigration that some are willing to stand against. However, just because something is legal doesn?t make it morally right. For example, if the African Slave trade were still in operation today, I would stand against it.

I explored the immigration ? slavery connection in a previous blog; however, yesterday I was once again reminded that some legal immigration is an ingredient for replacing hard working Americans with modern day immigrant ?slaves.?

OregonLive reported that the Department of Labor found that Oregonian forestry contractors who had receive federal stimulus funds used the money to hire foreign workers instead of unemployed Americans. The contractors used some loopholes within the H-2B (low-skill temporary work visa) program to avoid hiring U.S. workers to hire cheap foreign workers instead. Consider the following quote from the OregonLive news:

Victor Gomez, the office manager at GE Forestry, argued as much to Chu, lauding the Hispanics? work ethic. ?I think they?re more motivated for that money. They don?t have unemployment to go on. If they don?t work, they go back to Mexico.?

Think about what Victor Gomez is admitting in that statement. As recently as 2009, Americans held the very jobs he is now hiring ?Hispanics? (his term, not mine) for.

Gomez can?t threaten to send Americans home. He can threaten a LEGAL alien holding an H-2B visa. Americans have unemployment to fall back on, the LEGAL immigrants with visas do not.

What he is admitting is that the Hispanics fear losing their job more than Americans do. Gomez is paying $4 less per hour compared to 2009. Do you think Gomez is taking advantage of that fear?

Today we have a 21st century version of slavery; however, it?s LEGAL. And like the message in the NumbersUSA ad states, the immigration debate shouldn?t be about the color of one?s skin, their ethnicity, etc. Its about numbers. Here are the numbers to consider:

  • 500 ? The number of job applicants for 14 Oregonian forestry jobs advertised in 2009 at the prevailing wage.
  • 7 Million ? The amount of federal ?stimulus? dollars that were used to replace American workers with 254 seasonal immigrant workers.
  • $4 ? The amount hourly wages have decreased since 2009 in the Oregonian forestry industry according to Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.)
  • 0 ? The number of local Oregon workers wanting to work in forestry jobs today.

When we look at the numbers, the story becomes clear. Whether intentional or not, our representatives in Washington gave $7 million to replace American workers with LEGAL immigrants willing to work for less. I thought the stimulus was supposed to put people back to work, not replace them with LEGAL immigrants. Do you think LEGAL immigration is having any effect on our unemployment rate?

The GOP candidates and Obama have not addressed LEGAL immigration because as a nation we are afraid to question whether there can be too much of a good thing. Let?s take another look at LEGAL immigration by looking at the numbers. NumbersUSA doesn?t want to eliminate LEGAL immigration ? we only want to reduce it to levels that restore honor to our immigration tradition.

Partisans not locked in media 'echo chambers,' study finds

ScienceDaily (Jan. 31, 2012) ? Despite the fears of some scholars and pundits, most political partisans don't avoid news and opinion sources that contradict their own beliefs, according to a new study.

In fact, the more that self-described liberals and conservatives visited online sources supportive of their beliefs, the more likely they were to also view opposition websites, as well as general news sites.

"People aren't systematically avoiding websites that challenge their political views," said R. Kelly Garrett, co-author of the new study and assistant professor of communication at Ohio State University.

"They certainly are inclined to seek out sources that reinforce their views, but the more they do that, the more likely they are to at least sample sources that challenge their opinion."

Garrett conducted the study with Dustin Carnahan and Emily Lynch, graduate students in political science at Ohio State. Their results appear online in the journal Political Behavior and will be published in a future print edition.

While the internet has given users the opportunity to consume only information that they already agree with, this research suggests people aren't doing that.

"A conservative who uses conservative news sites like Newsmax is more likely to also view liberal news sites like Daily Kos," Lynch said.

For this study, the researchers used data from five different surveys of Americans taken from 2004 to 2008. Four of the surveys were sponsored by the Pew Internet and American Life Project, while the last was a survey funded by the National Science Foundation, which Garrett helped lead. Each of the surveys interviewed between about 600 and 2,500 randomly selected Americans.

The surveys asked respondents about their own political beliefs, and how often they visited ideologically oriented news websites. While the surveys differed in their wording, they generally asked respondents about their use of websites of politically liberal news organizations or blogs such as Alternet.org or DailyKos.com or politically conservative news organizations or blogs such as Newsmax.com or Townhall.com.

Respondents were also asked about their use of websites of major mainstream news organizations such as CNN.com and newspapers such as the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

The surveys suggest that about 14 percent of the Americans use ideologically consistent websites -- in other words, either conservative or liberal news sites or blogs that tend to support the readers' political worldview.

These users do not visit partisan websites at the expense of the mainstream media -- in fact they are more likely to use the mainstream media than are those who don't visit partisan sites.

Based on their analysis, the researchers predicted that the probability that the typical individual in the 2004 survey who visited partisan sites will use a major news organization's site is 78 percent -- 40 percentage points higher than the typical person who doesn't use partisan sites.

But partisans don't just visit the mainstream media sites -- results from the 2008 data showed that the more often that people visited websites that conformed to their views, the more likely they were to visit sites that opposed their views.

Furthermore, partisan website users don't typically count these sites as their main source of political content. Results from the 2008 survey showed that two out of three (67.3 percent) partisan news users also visited sources that included at least some attitude-challenging information -- such as mainstream news outlets -- more often than they used the more supportive partisan sites.

Garrett emphasized that he and his colleagues took into account the effects of political interest on news use. In other words, the results found in this study don't simply reflect the fact that politically interested people tend to visit more news websites overall than do non-interested people.

"Whether you're very interested in politics or only casually interested, if you visit websites supporting one political view, you're more likely to visit sites supporting the opposing view," he said.

Carnahan said the results give reason for some optimism about the public's use of media in regards to politics.

"On the whole, these findings suggest a more positive outlook for how citizens engage with politics through their media habits," he said.

"The public may be more open to seeking out and considering a variety of political perspectives than we previously thought."

Garrett added: "Looking at all sides of an issue is the first step by which people come to form or change their opinion. If people never look at the arguments of the other side, we have a problem -- we can't overcome differences, we can't compromise.

"Of course, it is not enough to simply look at what the other side has to say. But it is at least a start."

This study was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation.
