Fatal Florida Car Accidents Down, But Fatal Bicycle Accidents ...

Fatal bicycle accident - noyes newsFatal car accidents in Florida are down, but fatal Florida motorcycle crashes and bicycle accidents are up, according to the Florida Traffic Crash Statistics Report by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

According to the report, although fatal car accidents increased in Pinellas County (from 96 to 112), statewide fatalities as a result of car accidents on Florida roadways decreased between 2010 and 2011 by nearly 2 percent going from 2,444 to 2,400, respectively. Fortunately, this statewide trend has been seen over the past six years. Unfortunately, this trend isn't the same with motorcycle accidents and bicycle accidents. Motorcyclist and motorcycle passenger fatalities increased between 2010 and 2011 by approximately 18 percent from 383 to 451, respectively. Bicycle fatalities increased by nearly 58 percent from 76 bicycle accident death in 2010 to 120 bicyclists dying in Florida bike accidents in 2011.

Another bad trend documented in the report is that fatalities of teen drivers and their passengers increased between 2010 and 2011 by 7 percent, from 144 to 154 and alcohol was suspected in more fatal crashes ? 828 crashes in 2011, an increase of about 11 percent.

Alcohol was suspected in more Hillsborough crashes (about 1,400 in 2011) and Hernando crashes (about 170) than the previous year, while it was suspected in fewer Pinellas crashes (about 1,100) and Pasco crashes (about 400), compared with 2010.

A car accident, motorcycle crash or a bicycle accident can be devastating to those injured as well as the families of those injured or killed in these crashes. It is crucial that everyone drives safely, but as important, everyone must look out for drivers who fail to drive safely. A few extra seconds of safety can save your life.
